What can live with my betta?

I have a 3 gallon Eclipse System and as of now, there is one male betta and one African dwarf frog in it. I attempted to add some white cloud minnows to it this past weekend, however, my betta seems VERY aggressive! After about 45 minutes, Mike and I decided to take them out because my betta was flaring at them, chasing them and trying to nip at them. Should I have given my betta more time to get used to them or should I just assume that my betta is too aggressive? Any suggestions?

It may be best to leave him be as is. Does he pick on the frog? Corys go well with bettas but since your tank is a 3 gallon putting more fish in there could overcrowd it.

Hi Mike&Diana :)

Normally, I'd suggest corys to go with your betta, but your tank is just not big enough.

Corys are schooling fish, and the very least you could have in the tank, (for their comfort) is 2 or 3. Even pandas would be too much.

Why not get another frog and/or a few little snails?

My betta doesn't pick on my frog at all, they get along fine! I may get another frog, but I just wanted to have a couple more fish. Maybe it's not such a good idea since my tank is on the small side. But I've been reading on these forums, and there's some people who have 2.5 gallons with a betta and a couple other fish. I guess it just depends on the betta's temperament!

Have you had any close calls with frog escape from your Eclipse? I've got a 3-gallon at work, and I've been considering ADFs for the tank. I just didn't want one of my office neighbors coming into work to find a (probably dead) frog on their desk.

Hi susangc :)

All frogs are jumpers, and so are a lot of fish. A secure tank cover will solve this problem, though.

It's tough to mix anything with a betta, they're all so different. You've learned that yours has a bit of an attitude problem :X :dunno:

They do get territorial and maybe he's already taken over the tank. You could try rearranging decor and adding the fish at the same time so he's forced to restablish territory. But no promises that will work. You may be better off just leaving him alone.

Susan,

I've had no close call escapes with my frog, though I do have a hood over it. A secure cover should do!

I think I may just leave my betta be, but I wish I could get one or two fish. But it might be best just to let him be alone. He does have an attitude problem!
The idea about re-arranging the tank sounds like a good one. However, the night I put the white clouds in was also my betta's first night in the tank. So I didn't think he had already established territory, but he must have!
