Hello Everybody! I just had a question that's been haunting me for almost a week now on if i should buy more fish or not to put with my Betta...Theres ample space for my Betta "Goober" to move around, but I dont want to follow that 1 inch per 5 gallon rule...I think that doesnt even make sense. Anyways can anyone give me any combinations that I can have if I want to have more than one fish in a 3 gallon tank? Please Reply! Thanks

3 gallons is fine for a betta, but other fish, as they have different requirements, need a bigger tank. They are more sensitive to water conditions and need more space to move about. Can't think of anything tbh, except possibly a dwarf frog, but even there 3 gallons may be on the small side- I haven't got any experience of frogs.

Never heard of a 1 inch/5 gallon rule; the standard rule is 1 inch/gallon, but that does NOT apply to 3 gallon tanks, as the sort of fish it applies to (tetras, livebearers etc) need more space to move.

You could add a couple of ghost shrimp depending how aggressive your betta is they may be fine or they may be eaten. African dwarf frogs should also be fine, i have 2 on their own in a 2.5 gallon tank. They need a cover or they can escape.

What's a dwarf frog? How large do those grow? Can't i just add more tetras?

I'm sorry that tank is way to small for anything other than a betta and one ADF.
The bloodfin tetra Aphyocharax anisitsi is a schooling fish and needs to be in groups of at least 5 and a tank of a least 20 gallons is recomended for them. are you aware that bloodfins can live for upto 10 years?

Hi Goober

You can read all about frogs in the amphibians, inverts and aquatic reptiles section, read the pinned topics at the top, this is also a good site for african dwarfs http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwarfs.html

The reason you can't have tetras is they need to be in groups of at least 5 and so would need a 10 gallon minimum. If you get a 10 gallon you could have some corys but these also need to be in groups and so are no good for the 3 gallon.

But half the size....

yeah but the 10 gallon tank is 10 bucks and is the same thing as the 20 gallon but the 20 gallon is bigger...if it were 10 dollars more I would understand...

Allow me to explain, the reason a 100 gallon tanks is WAY more expensive than a 50 gallon tank is because of the amount of water it holds, there is an increase of pressure. Therefore you need thicker (more expensive) glass.

Where are you buying tanks that a 10g costs $10 and a 20g costs $35??? I have never seen that big a discrepancy in any store.

You should be able to get a 20g tank for super cheap (with filter, hood, etc.) on the used market, if you have the patience. Craigslist is a good place to look...

i have no idea where you're finding a 10g for $10 that also includes the hood... you can get them for that price with no lid, but the hood is really expensive. plus you'll need a filter and heater (among other things that quickly rack up the bill :p)
