I was thinking of the figure 8 but, many people here in the brackfish forum said they are a not a freshwater puffer. So hmmm, what are the true freshwater puffers or the ones that require minimal salt. I dont want to kill my barbs or red-fin shark.

i know of dwarf puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and dwarf imitator puffers (Carinotetraodon imitator) are very similar if not the same species (only difference in color of spots) and are true freshwater puffers.

the only problem is that they can get very nippy and hurt other fish, even kill them. they should be kept in a species only tank w/ otto cats to control algae. otherwise you might have a lot of problems on your hands.

i hope this helps a little

:D

i need some that i know are compatible with barbs. How much salt can barbs handle if any? I really like colorfull fish, so the more options i have the better :)

There are no puffers that are guaranteed safe with other species. Nope. nada, nil. zip. zero.

There are many true freshwater puffers but all of them are unpredicatable at best and aggressive preditory psychos at worst.

You can not keep puffers unless you start a new tank.

You could try dwarf freshwater puffers so long as your tank is heavily planted and has lots of hiding places, this unfortunately can work against you as well because it gives the puffers places to hide and then ambush the other fish.

I kept a shoal of 15 dwarf freshwater puffers in a 5 foot heavily planted tank that included neons, rasboras, danios, otos, flying foxes, and some are OK as they swim too fast for the puffers and the others kind of learn to stay out for their way.

You will get some nipped fins though.

As stated by SirMinion it's best to set up a species only tank, for some reason otos seem OK with them.
