hello all, we have three goldfish and one fifty cent piece size painted turtle , I now have an algae issue after removing the wild snails we had in the tank, what we would like to know is what kind of algae eating fish can we put in with 3 g fish and one small turtle? we run a filter and it is a 15 gal tank
thank you

You can't really add anything because the goldfish will outgrow the tank very quickly as it is: fancy goldfish are able to grow over 12 inches long, common goldfish are even larger. Your priority should be to upgrade your tank as fast as possible: I would want a 4+*2*2 ft for fancy goldfish or a 6+*2*2 ft for common goldfish, and that size tanks would be good enough for the long term. They would allow you to keep more species as well and would take more than just the three goldfish.

You should also read up about the turtle-goldfish compatibility…

The goldfish is an issue but the terrapin is more worrying (unless you have a chinese pug nose turtle which is the only fully aquatic fresh water terrapin). Turtles need land to allow themselves to rest and dry their shells. Goldfish should be kept in much larger tanks as they are very large fish when fully grown. By keeping it in a tank that is restrictive to it achieving its full size, the fish will have stunted growth which leads to internal problems such as twisted spines and underdeveloped internal organs. This will greatly reduce the life span of your goldfish (a well kept goldfish will live for 30-40 years in appropriate conditions)

Another myth is goldfish actually have long term memories upto 9 months so you can teach them tricks if you have time and patience.

Algae eater I would say a horned nerite stands the best chance but still may get eaten.

Do you have any reliable sources for this? I have never seen any for 30-40 years being the average, only ones in the 25-30 year range.

Theres been unregistered reports of goldfish that are 45 years old. I can't find a scientific source but I am an ex goldfish keeper and breeder and now hold 30-40 as my general rule if kept in ideal conditions with the ideal feed. Many people over feed protein and fats to their goldfish which can cause harm as they do require variance.

Why did you remove the snails? I have a fishkeeping friend that I give my snails to feed her turtle ...

Very good point! + snails are natural ecology and fil a niche in a biosphere if there was not oppurtunity they would not survive

And I just remembered ... she says her goldfish love them too! I think they're a wonderful and free way to feed your turtle live food.

Unregistered reports dont really hold any water (exuse the pun) there has unregistered reports of aliens does not mean its true. While your experince may truly be far greater then mine on goldfish husbandry untill i see ant decent exvidence or paper produced to back a 50yr lifespan ill would rather belive the fact that 25-35 years being the norm in good conditions :good:

Aye, I can imagine one off reports, but I don't think it's the average for well kept fish… after all, it wouldn't be fair to say that human lifespan is 110-120 years ;)

I said 30-40 years thats a 5 year increase on your range not 15 years increase if I had stated 50 years old.

I can gaurantee there are aliens, the US state department estimates a population of 11,550,000 illegal workers across America. If your referring to space aliens then bacteria is a life form and has been observed as being present on meteors and asteroids therefore we are not the only planet in the universe which has been blessed with the miracle of life.
