What about this mix

One male betta with a few glass catfish and several corie (cory?) catfish as a start, any major compatibility issues there?

Now add a few guppies, thoughts?

THe cories are fine with the betta. The rest depends on the betta. There have been many people here that have had trouble with the betta/guppy thing and others have had no trouble. all depends on the nature of the betta you get.

I have had no problems with keeping bettas with guppies, but not everyone has been this lucky. I would advise you against putting guppies with bettas.

Bettas + guppies is risky.

I found that when I put some cories in with a betta, the betta flared at them for a bit, but after a day or two he was used to them and now they all coexist happily. Remember to keep decent-sized shoals of glass cats and corys, cos they are shoal fish.

In other words...sounds good to me.
