I'm thinking about picking up a dwarf puffer. It's kind of spur of the moment, but not totally. About a month back I decided I wanted one, and did a bit of research... But stopped, because I decided I really did not need another fish.

Well, i had a 5 gallon tank set up to keep plants in, and recently moved my plants to an outdoor tank... So now I have a sandy-bottomed 5 gallon, some plants... And I was thinking "Hmm... One of those dwarf freshwater puffers sounds REALLY nice right now!" :)

So, if, say... Next week, I wanted to go pick up a freshwater dwarf puffer... What extra things should I buy with him? (things I most likely would not have from my other aquarium of tropicals) I was thinking about buying some snails and some ghost shrimp and putting them in my outdoor tank (knowing my plants will be murdered, but I can accept that ^_^) as one food option for my puffers, hoping the snails will breed. Perhaps if that works out, feeding 1-2 snails a week, some smaller ghost shrimp, and frozen bloodworms. Is that a proper diet plan for a puffer?

I am not sure how heavy filtration they need, I was intending to make a simple small sponge filter, but if they are in need of heavier filtration, I can invest in an external filter, or even work out a shared filtration system for my 2 tanks (maybe. I'm not sure if I'm that crafty)

I'm excited about getting one of these guys now, but I want to make sure I know everything I need to know first!

Oh, and a big questions - IS 5 gallons enough for a dwarf freshwater puffer? I know it's a minumum, but would he actually be happy? I can't afford to upgrade at this time, considering my limited space in my room ^^

From what I have heard 3g is an apsolute minimum, 5g is good because it leaves room for mistakes, such as: forgeting to do a water change, but if you are the type of person who frequently forgets to water change, a dp is definately not for you.

All the best on your decision, Ed
