Hi all

I have recently brought a new skimmer, a V2 skim 1000, the skimmer is really easy to control and i can skim really wet and fill the collection cup up with a nice green/brown skimate every day if i like, the thing is I am not really sure if skimming in this way is any good, I am skimming slower at the moment so i get a much darker skimate and do not have to empty the cup so often. Is there any reason to ever wet skim?

Thanks
VM

i believe wet skimming and dry skimming are about as effective as each other. TMC reccomend that the bubbles come upto about 1/3rd of the way up the neck.

Hi Ben, I guess its just a case of letting it skim the way it is now then. I have to say mate this skimmer is running great, it is pulling out so much compared to my last skimmer it unreal, I can already notice a big improvement in my tank.

I love the smell of the skimate, does that make me strange

Ben is correct. Wet vs Dry skimming is all about convenience for the aquarist. Assuming the skimmer has a halfway decent air inlet system, the only proven difference in rate of skimmate production is the size of the reaction chamber. Skimmers are actually REALLY good at what they do and remove what they CAN remove very very fast. Ultimately wet skimmate is just the same amount of actual protein with more seawater in it.
