I have a 155 gallon tank with a wet-dry filter. I have 3 cichlids that are going to be big fish. I am having some issues and wanted to see if someone can give me some advice.

Problem:
Everytime I feed the fish live food (ghost shrimp, guppies) all the guppies or shrimp get sucked into the overflow box for my wet dry and die on the filter. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

Concern:
With big cichlids in the tank is it possible that they will knock the overflow box off and cause a problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

if you reduce the intake of the return pump, that shouldmean less powerful water flow through the overflow box

Is it possible to put some sort of sponge inside the overflow box to prevent larger particles and fsh to get sucked up?

The overflow boxes i'Ve seen would allow this and this should taake care of your problem

just remove the sponge when the food is gone
