So my power is out and im on my laptop and decided to ask if anyone knows if wrapping a blanket around a tank actually works, when you actually get up and do it, it seems like a joke. also, is it odd for my flame an clown to follow eachother around liek mated pairs of fish, they never leave eachothers side, until sleep time comes. i cant find any articles on it. And I have bad news something happened to my mushroom, i think it got eaten but im not sure by what.

Am not sure if the blanket thing works but it certainly can't hurt!

My Fiji Blue Devil damsel and my Regal tang are the best of friends and always stay together. Also an unlikely pairing but they are happy!!

Sorry to hear about the mushroom....Maybe time to get a torch out and have a late night watching your live rock for unnoticed hitch-hikers.... :grr:

rut roh, no power = BAD. Wrapping a blanket is a must, but more important than that is flowrate . Without flow, your corals WILL die from suffocation in short order. Is there any way you can get a generator or a power inverter to help just run your powerheads?

When I was without power for 3.5 days I ran a power inverter off of my car parked in the driveway. Extension chords into the house and just had enough power to flip on my powerheads. The temp got down to 62f by the end of it but everybody lived since I was able to supply them with flow.

o well our generator is working now but my tank went 6 hours throughout the night without flow i hope everything is ok... ill report back in a lil bit

The blacket method in theory would work, but practically wouldent. A large amount of water has a big surface area. The water would have to keep comeing into contact with the insulating material to be effective. And without a powerhead for circulation the water sits motionless, meaning the water can lose heat freely. Also its hard to insulate water, a hot object can speed up the movement of the water paricals meaning they will themselves release energy which in turn will release heat. So i would say no the blanket method is a dud. Well its better than nothing i guess.

Hope your fish are OK

Actually, the blanket method works quite well to preserve heat. Is it as good as wrapping the tank in foam neoprene, aerogel, or fiberglass insulation, absoloutely not. But putting a blanket over the tank prevents convection loss, evaporation loss, and forced convection loss of heat energy from the water tu a MUCH better degree than leaving it un-covered. In fact, you will loose 3-5 TIMES more heat energy without the blanket than you will with it on. And unfortunately, turning pumps on churns the surface of the water and adds some convective heat loss, however oxygenation is more important than heat...

I've got my fingers crossed for you, good thing you got that generator out.

well everything in my tank survived and is doing great, the power was out for about 1 week, and we set our generator to go on ever few hours, we were stuck on our property so we couldnt go get gas, so we could only use it sparingly, and i heated up water and put it in a glass jar letting it float around in the water, yup yup thnx for the tips guys .
