Well, it has now been 4 to 5 days since I added the Red Slime Control and what do you know, it is still there but even worse! :shout: I know that a lot of you had said that you did not think that it was in fact Dino. However, things have really changed in the tank. Yes, I do think that there was some cyano in the tank because that seems to be gone. However, now I have long stringy brown snot filled with bubbles that almost looks like it is oozing off the rocks and floating right up to the surface. It gets all over the corals like a net. I also think that is why my torch is not doing well.

I went to my LFS and talked to the guy there about it. He gave me two options: One, I could add matrix carbon to the sump and he seemd to think this would get rid of it. Two, he said that I could use Ich attack, but it was a chemical and should be a last resort.

Do you think that the carbon will work? Also, what do you think about adding the ich attack?

Thanks

There is another treatment which may or may not work... It does work on hair algae and people report limited success with Dinos. The method, get your magnesium concentration up to 1500-1600ppm. Mg that high seems to be fine for corals/fish but uncomplex algaes (hair algae, dinoflagellates, etc) seem to suffer from it. Wish I had better options for you

i hear over in reef central that overdosing kalk works (aka high alkalinity) but a high magnesium would probably provide the same effect.

Yes. i am going to try this out tonight when I get home from work. I guess I am just going to use epsom salt that I picked up this weeken for now. I really hope that this works because it is driving me crazy. :shout:

No one has ever heard about using Ich Attack?

I've never heard of Ich attack really doing anything... Doesnt kill Ich, doesn't harm corals, doesn't do anyhthing really. Never heard of it used for Dinos though...

So it should be ok to at least try out? You don't seem to feel that there would be any danger to the inverts, corals and fish with this product?

It'd be OK to try, I just think it's a waste of time and $$. I'd go with the magnesium first

Ok. I agree with you. I have raised the Magnesium level in the tank up to about 1500 ppm. My test kit won't allow me to go higher than that. I got it to about 1400 and then added a little more epsom salt. So my guess is that it is around 1500ppm. I will check again tonight when I get home.

Thanks for your help. i will keep you posted. Seems like a lot of other people have had nighmares with this stuff. :shout:

That's it, I did it. I went and purchased the Ich Attack product. I got home tonight and my tank looked like someone poured 20 gallons of brown spiderwebs into my tank. You can't even see the corals anymore. The torch coral I think is dead. The fish don't look very happy and I can't even tell if I have live rock anymore or just piles of stringy slime. This is VERY BAD!!!! I think that if the Ich Attack does not work I am going to have to junk the whole tank and start over. New live rock, fish, coral........... I am very discouraged right now. :(

Ok. I just want to keep you all up to date on what is going on with my crisis. The torch coral is my most important piece in the tank. I have segregated him from the hell. I used an old isolation tank that is plastic, filled with small drilled holes and has suction cups on it for holding a fish by the surface. What I did was put the torch out in the open down into the sand, cleaned him off and placed the plastic isolation tank over him to protect him from the slime. He has started to come out of his skeleton already. He seems very happy now. I just want to try to protect him from this shat! Excuse my language but I am very upset.

I will keep you posted.... Hopefully the Ich Attack will start working soon. The dude at the lfs seems to think it will work...

Man thats not cool... Have you double checked your input water's TDS lately?
