Well,

After all this talk about bala's I just had to go get some!!

Unfortunately my supplier only had two left :/ :/ , but did say he would get more for me :D :D :D

I wanted to get at least 8, but guess I'll have to wait.

They are swimming happily in their quarentine tank awaiting their permanent home in the 120.

Hmmmm....is the cichlidmaster surcoming to tropicals???

:)

Funny you should say that!!

My only real display tank consists of 13 clown loaches, a trio of rainbows, 3 large red hooh silver dollars and the soon to be bala's.

It is really the only tank I will sit and watch for any length of time.

Oh by the way their all in a 120 gallon tank.

Very peaceful tank!!!

CM

The loaches are the most entertaining/fascinating fish to watch (imo) a large group chasing each other around

and the rainbows (which ones?) - mine (bosmani) look amazing when they do their syncronized swimming thing

:)

Cant wait to get my 135g (coming later this year) my balas are the main feature of my tank and IMHO are far more interesting than clown loaches,CM why dont you see if you can get them to breed,my ones have got so close its untrue but i dont know what to do to get them to take it that one step closer.

good for you CM you should have done it long ago I think they are the most peaceful fish anyone could have I plan on buying my four more which I will have a big big tank in about 8 months or less 175 gallon or even larger it depends on what kind of money I have to spend and if I get my water problems fixed.

I found a web site that took me to a link about breeding balas it is called fish profiles.com u just have to keep clicking on the links it should help you out some on this matter. And thanks again for your help on my balas the one that I was so worried about is looking for me to feed him all the time.

thats the problem with silver sharks, best kept in a group ..... but people don't realise the size they can reach :/

got 5 in my 'pub' tank 4.5' but know that one day they will have to be moved

:)

As you know CM Bala's are very nervous fish and i must say watch out for them slaming their heads off the glass! I losted one in that way.

Graeme.

I cant believe what I am reading.......lol CM is going tropicals.......someone get me my nitro tabs......lol...j/k buddy
Next thing you now he will be putting sand in the tanks so the clowns can dig around....lol

Congrats my friend, I am sure you will have hours of enjoyment

I had a look on the site but all it said was that balas are too big to breed in home aquariums
My sharks are about 3 years old and for the last 6 months at least have been displaying pre spawning behaviour (at least that what i think it is)They pair up with the two smaller ones (males?) gently nibbling the two larger ones (females?) and then very slowly drifting around the tank side by side with their mouths gapping before going back to the nibbling, this goes on for hours sometimes but thats as far as it ever gets,if anyone has any info or ideas on how this could be taken further i would be very grateful although i must admit im not very optomistic on ever getting them to breed as all the experts say its impossible,but...................

they have to be some way if that was the case then how come they sell them at the lfs i will go back and see if I can find that site it wasnt on the fish profile site I just kept on clicking on the different links that would pop up ever now and then and come across it that way when I do I will pm you so you can go straight to it . ANd thatnks again for your help the balas are doing much better

I think you'll find they're commercially breed using hormone injections...

:)

Thanks FKSM i look forward to it,always nice to read up on my fish, glad to here your bala is doing well now you should start to see areal difference in them soon.

WWW i thought that was the case with breeding them but i cant help but think there must be a way to get them going, after all no one goes around injecting them in the wild do they  Im sure if i could hit on the right trigger i could get them to spawn but in a community tank it isnt safe to start messing with the water and temperature to try and find what it is,maybe a project for the future.

Well,

Picked up 6 more bala's yesterday!! Only half the size of the first two, but they should be alright.

Should be putting them in the 120 gallon tank this weekend.

Hey Les....just in time for your visit!!!

As for breeding........they could very well be bred in large ponds since most of the ones exported are exported out of Asia!!!
