Hi all

Today I put my corys in their new tank so I left the light off for several hours.

I turned the light back on and sat down to watch and admire my corys in their new environment  , all was well for about an hour or 2.

When I looked in the tank I could only find 4 of the 5 corys, so Im looking and looking until i saw what looked like a tail sitting on top of the sand and i thought what the hell.

There are only the 5 corys in the tank so i knew nothing had eaten him, his tail was not moving, so i quickly and gently dug him up, he seemed stunned and sat very still for about 10 mins, that was about 3 hours ago and he is back to normal now.

Why would he do that, does anyone have any idea????

cheers

hi cmfoggy

iv heared afew people on here say the same thing but its never happend to me.
i wonder if they dig to far down for food and the sand back fills traping them.

Hi Drewry and rmanpf

Thats what I thought something along those lines.

Should I take out some sand so it is not so thick, its currently about 2 inches.

thanks

hi cmfoggy

i would :good:
this will stop the build up of gas underneath it aswell i only have mine an inch deep

Thanks Drewry

Yeah I think I will take out some sand today when I do a water change, hopefully the plants will be ok with that, Im thinking they should be.

:D

cheers

Hi cmfoggy :)

Sometimes they do dig deeper than you would think they should, but I never saw one go that far down. Did he come from a tank with a gravel bottom before you moved him?

I would take out some sand too. An inch of it is plenty.

Hey Inchworm

Yeah he came from gravel substrate into sand substrate, and I dont think they have ever seen sand before.

After i dug him up i thought i should have got a photo of his tail sticking out of the sand but i was just concerned about getting him out.

Yeah im going to take out some sand today.

Thanks, cheers

thats a good idea cmfroggy, albinos can get into the weirdest places

You can leave the sand a little deeper where the plants are and make it thinner in the open areas.
I have one that did that when it got frightened. It would do a nose dive into the sand. It always came out eventually though. When I changed to ecco complete it quit doing that. I guess this is too rough for nose dives.

If the sand is too thin they may dig up your plants...

Thanks ICEEGRL

I took out some sand yesterday now it is about an inch deep (bit deeper in some places) but still about 1 1/2 to 2 inches where the plants are.

I haven't seen them do it again so fingers crossed they wil be fine.

cheers

Hopefully if the plants are well rooted they will stay put. I just can't grow anythung but moss in sand with Corys. I need to get weights and put them where I can find them when I need them! I have plenty that I have saved, but I can never find them when I want them. And I always think I have put then in a logical place!

Great, now you got me worried about my corys

Hi SSC

Yeah sorry about that

Well it happened on the very first day, that was nearly 2 weeks ago and it hasn't happened since so maybe they are fast learners. :D

cheers
