okay so i set up my breeding tank early today, added spiderman into it and sookie into a breeding trap [theyve been going nuts over each other for ages]

but spidey decided that he didnt want to do anything but cruise around and occasionally look at sookie, whereas sookie was flaring at him and wiggling at him

so i did some reading that to encourage nest building you should let the female out for a little bit to peek his interest, so i did

sipdey doesnt chase her or nip her or anything the most he will do is swim up to her, flare a little then head straight under the polystyrene which doesnt happen too often

cause Sookie is usually the one that flares at him and chases him under the polystyrene, once both under there she will flare at his side and nudge him almost, whereas he will just wiggle!

it has helped somewhat with the nest building, only cause sookie is forcing him to!

[no one has been nipped or hurt during this, the are far too nice to each other which is the weird thing]

heres a vid of the general goings on:

any insight to why? is he a wimp? are they not compatible or are they just gentle spawners?

shes back in the trap right now btw

hiya :)

Im guessing you have already researched but just a few questions,

How long were they conditioned for?
How long was the female in the chimney?

To me it looks like the male still wants to improve his bubblenest.

I'll reply here as well :ninja:

they were conditioned for at least 3 weeks =] and she has been in for about 8 hours

now he has taken more interest in her and blowing bubbles rather than cruising lol

Hello, I think the problem here is that you haven't given him enough time to call the breeding tank his own territory, he needs time to adjust to it and build his bubble nest before you introduce the female, I usually condition my males in their breeding tanks. I would remove the female completely from his sight for the next 2-3 days or so and give him a chance to build a nice bubble nest under that cup, when you have seen he has done so then you can reintroduce the female in her chimney for a few hours and then release her, they should then spawn as they look a promising pair, it can be a slow process breeding bettas and one must be patient! rushing it is the reason why so many fail but I see they have been conditioned and they look in good health so you are half way there :good:

They are such beautiful fish, good luck with the breeding.

I agree with Betta fish, it looks as though he is still getting settling in.
I've always put the male in first & leave him there alone for about 48hrs, maybe more depending on how he seems then I introduce the female in her section, so that he can show off to her & make any final changes to the nest, then I let her out.

They are normally wrapping within an hour.
