At my LPS today when I went in and got Turq I noticed there were at least 100 all blue and all red bettas set to the side, I asked what they were for and they said they were going to be used as a center piece in little bowls for a wedding. That's like $800 dollars worth of bettas, not to mention how much it'll cost for water change and food, imagine how long it'd take to change and feed them all! But yeah.. I wonder what they're going to do with them after the wedding because the person at the shop said the people wern't sure but they'd figure it out after the wedding, surely they won't be able to find that many homes.. Poor guys. :/ I think people shouldn't buy things like that if they're not prepared to offer good homes and not to just pass them off as some decoration.

I seem to recall another horror story from a while ago about bettas being used in the center of tables at a wedding . Its a good idea, but you just need to plan it well, and plan what your going to do with so many bettas after the event.

suppose they are hoping guests will take them home. One of my teachers where I work has a goldfish in his class from a wedding he went to, lovely fish...but he said guests were putting food and drink in the goldfish bowls :( :(

Yes, I once kept several goldfish from my brother's wedding. They'd been used as centerpieces (and they lasted only a little while). I've also got one rosy red that is the sole survivor of a play production we had at our college recently. I think it's sad that people will do this just because it looks good. It does, sure, but fish aren't as disposable as some might think.

When I worked at an lfs someone wanted 50 red and 50 blue bettas... so we got them in..

they were going into small bowls, and were to be taken home by guests after the wedding..

not sure how much they paid for them, but they did get 3 free of each color in case some died.. lol

Took awhile for me to bag 100 bettas.. but its better then doing actual work

Yeah i've heard of 2 weddings with bettas as centre pieces around here but only about 20 bettas used. Wish i was invited to those weddings, I'd be scoping out every table for the best one, lol. Naw just buggin. But personally i wouldn't do that. If people wanted a fish, they would've boughten one already and the majority of the guests have no idea how to keep a fish. Would be better if attached to each bowl was a card for info/care on bettas.

People that do that have no interested in the fish itself... they just think it looks cool, and is more exciting to look at then a plant or whatever..

Most of the bettas probably die within 2 weeks of the wedding (I wouldn't doubt)

Even the people buying them for the wedding knew nothing about them.

I knew a florist who once had to talk his bride out of a mad plan to release the bettas into the ocean "to be free", as a symbol of her something something wedding love something.

He finally said, "They will all die, and that isn't symbolic of something you want associated with your wedding."

Actually, MY horror story didn't turn out as bad as it could have. Basically, what my friend decided to do was get 1 fish per person in the wedding PARTY, so there was only about 12-13 fish, and each person in the wedding party took the betta home with them. MY fiancee who was in the party was nice enough to pick out a georgeous crowntail for me. ^_^ And the 'vases' they were in were those super huge wine glass shaped glass containers... I tested and it ended up about being a gallon and a half - 2 gallons. And the roses in there were fake, and tied to the one side so the fish could swim to the surface for air okay. ... but still 100 betta's?! Thats a ####load of fish... but still, I agree the fish will be lucky if 25% of them survive, depending on who and what is at the party that wants to take one.

Lately I've been thinking that when I get married, I'd love to have some babies from my Opaque line as centre pieces.. but then again, I want a small wedding and I'd take home every single one LOL.

That is actually how i got my frist betta mortimer (who lives nearly 4 years). My now ex-boyfriend and his brother each got one from a wedding (they were the centre pieces) they planned on making them fight. So my friend and I went over there one day and rescued them.

I don't think it's a good idea to have them as centre pieces, as you never know who will pick them up.

I want to use human infants as centerpieces at my wedding :D
We'll have to drug them first of course, because they're only attractive when quiet and the only way to insure quiet is deep sleep from which they are physically incapable of awakening for several hours at least, but I think it'll work out.

The only way I'd ever have bettas in my wedding is as guests
Or possibly presents :shifty:

Actually I don't plan to have a wedding party at all, so everything I say is kinda moot.

I've been to a wedding where they used bettas as center pieces, this is where I got my Snowball:

But it wasn't a 100+ there - maybe like 12 the most, one for each table. The bride made sure the ppl who got the bettas knew how to take care of them or she wouldn't of given them to the person.

There's something called responsiblity.

I wouldn't flame ppl who have them at the as center pieces as long as they knew they would get them good homes. Plus that just means more folks added to the addiction.
