After much research & help from everybody here, I purchased a beautiful blue/red/green crowntail at our lps - the guy that works in the fish department is really great ... took my son around the whole place (it is large!) and explained all the different fish to him.... even fed a grouper in front of us - yikes that is a SCARY fish!!!

Our new buddy (named "BUBBLES" ... keeping my fingers crossed that he will love us enough to one day .... ;) ) is currently being acclimatized to his new home ... floating away looking very happy.

I have one question about age - he was significantly smaller than the other bettas (around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches)... does that mean he is younger? Any ideas how old he might be?

Again my thanks to all of you for patiently listening to the ramblings of a crazy newbie!!!

Cynthia

P.S. I will try to post a picture of him tomorrow so you can all see Bubbles :)

He sounds wonderful! :D
Usually the smaller the betta, the younger it is. Thats not always the case though. Some bettas can be stunted or just don't grow to their full size.

Edit: Oops...sorry for the double post. Stupid computer :X

He's in his tank now & really seems to be enjoying himself - he ate 1 pellet (I tried 2 more but he spat them back out at me so I scooped them out) and gave me a good flare too :)

Now he's investigating his tank-mate Gary and his plant :)

He seems to have a bend behind his top fin (is that dorsal?) kinda like a small v ... is that normal?

Cynthia

A bend? Is that in his spine, or in the fin? But, yes, the top fin is called dorsal. The one underneath him is called his anal fin. The ones underneath him near his face are the ventrals. The ones on the sides of him that he uses most often (usually clear, but can have some color) are his pectorals. And the tail is called the caudal.

Don't be surprised if he spits pellets back out at you. That's just him trying to soften them up for him. Consider it him chewing on the pellet.

It is kinda at the base where his tail starts - I think it is normal from other betta pics I've seen, but I'm not 100% sure.

So should I leave the ones he spits out at the bottom of the tank for a bit? They were in there for about 10 minutes.

WHEN ARE YOU GONNA GET PICTURES!?!?!?!?!
I will borrow my father-in-law's digital camera tomorrow morning & try to post pics then :)

Can't wait to see what you all think of him!!

SCORE!!! i love CT they are so gorgeous i cant wait im gonna be up all night waiting for the pics to appear!

Oh, if they were sitting there for ten minutes, then you were right to remove them. It seemed from your post that you were practically stealing them right from in front of his nose. :p

When you do get photos of him, take a picture from above or whichever angle where you most notice this bend. Then we can better tell you whether it's normal or not. :)

Crowntails are sooo gorgeous. . especially red/blues!! I cant wait to see pics of Bubbles :D! I'm sure he'll start a huge bubble nest soon, he sounds very luffed.
