Watts Per Gallon

can somebody tell me what watts per gallon is used for and how do i work out what the 'watts per gallon' is for my tank?

How many watts your light bulb is and how many watts their is per gallon.... Example - 15 watts light in a 15 gallon tank is 1 WPG

Usually worked out in us gallons, but only use it as a rough guide as there are far too many variables.
