Hi i am watching a movie called "Frankenfish" its good. Anyhow these fish kills and gets out of the water. Which brings me to my question. Is there fish that can live out of the water and breathe air? I heard that the gouramis dont have gills and they come up for air but i dont think that they can live out of the water. So not that i would keep any fish that dont live in water im just curious. Any help would be great. Thanx.

labyrinth fish like gouramis and bettas can breath air.

However, they will eventually die if they are left outside of the water over an extended period of time, although they won't die from suffocation

I've heard somewhere that a fish known as the climbing perch can climb trees and stay in the trees for several days, but it sounds a bit weird to me.

I do know that snakeheads and several types of catfish can traverse the land between lakes/ponds/rivers in search of new habitats. That is one of the reasons why Americans fear snakeheads so much nowadays :p

P.T.

i heard that if a clown loach jumps out of its tank it can stay out for one day!

you are all missing the obvious

Lungfish, they have lungs, not dissimilar to ours.

Thanx guys for all your replies. This is very interesting. Now im scared of snakeheads. I hope they dont come to texas.

Clariias catfish (from Africa) can go for long periods as long as their skin is damp, they move from pool to pool over land, using their stiff pectoral fin spines as 'feet' :p

I remembered another one.

This one is a story my dad told me. When he was little, he lived in a village with lots of paddy fields. In these paddy fields, there is a certain type of catfish, which i only know by the Malay name of 'keli'. Anyway, the meat of this fish is supposed to be very tender and tasty.

So how do you catch this fish? Simple. You wait for the DRY season. Then you simply look for their burrows, where they secrete mucus and stay in it and wait for the next rainy season. I think they can last a few months in there.

P.T.

Labyrinth fish like most gouramies, climbing perches and bettas can theoreticaly live their whole lives outside water provided they remain damp. However, they do have gills and do take a little oxygen from the water (though they will drown without access to the surface). And it is true that climbing perches can climb trees using their kind of spiny fins as 'claws' or hooks.

Not unless some clueless hobbist dumps their pet snakehead in their water way.

Neice + Net - Me = Don't ask...
