Well it's the second day so far this year that the temp rises above 80 and each time my tank gets to to like 82~84. It's usually about 78.

1. Do I need a water chiller
2. Isn't the heather like a toaster, when it reaches an certain internal temp it's stop?

Thanx

i dont really think a chiller is needed unless its like this all year. a heater has a thermostat, so even the coils hasnt reached the temperature, it will still turn off

Does your tank have a hood? is there a "feeding hatch"?

I found the best way to lower the water temp in hot days was to remove the feeding hatch to let the water evapourate, also opening a window usually helps once the top is off. You could also install cooling fans, or have a desk fan on in the room, not too close to the tank or that will cool it too much, there are lots of cheap solutions before you go down the Chiller route.

i purchased a little fan called Tiny Tornado that clips on or attaches with suction cups at homedepot. Cost me about 6 bucks. My tank during the day rised to about 81-82 degrees but now it stays real cool at 78-79. Like Andy said, keeping the hood off will deffinately help the temp. problem also. But at night it does get significantly colder so you should put it back on at night if u think the temp. will drop.

I just had this problem with my tank aswell. You can always set a fan on a timer with your lights.

Thats how I do it. Fans are on the same plug as my lights after the timer so they come on and off with the lights. I also use a window mount air conditioner to keep the room at 77 by day and 73 by night (so I can sleep). Doesnt use too much electricity keeping it at 77 and thats cool enough to keep the tank about 81 so far.

The easiest and probably cheapest way is to keep the feeding hatch open if you have one. Make sure all the radiators/heaters in the room are turned down or off, and keep the window open to try and keep the room a bit cooler.

Well I did open the glass top a crack this morning before I left for work, but that was for a different reason. I'll see when I get home from work.

Just watch none of your fish leap out! :X

What I did:

Get an empty water bottle, and rinse it out and take off any labels. Fill it up and freeze it, and when your tank needs a cool off take the bottle out and let it float in your tank. Works better if you have a HOB filter and you let the current run over the bottle.

Freeze a few ice cubes with RO water and then use them in the tank. It'll cool it off and top it off at the same time. :)
