Hi all. Pretty new to these forums so hope someone can help me. I currently own a rena 4ft tank (265l) it has been cycling for 4 weeks. I have checked the water parameters last night and tonight and so far the pph is 7.5 ammonia is 0 but nitrite is just over 1.6mg and nitrate is nearly 110mg how can I lower these, as I have two fish put by for collection on saturday. If if help's they are a leopard pleco and a frontosa. All help appreciated.

Water changes will help lower your nitrites. Your nitrates should be between 5-20ppm (not sure what that translates into for milligrams, though), depending on how well-planted your tank is.

Thanks for the reply.I have only plastic plants in there probably won't get any real ones. What would you recommend, 20% water change?

Yeah, I do about 10-15% water changes on my tanks. I'd probably do bigger ones, but I'm kind of on the injured list right now (tore my rotator cuff at work), so lifting 5 gallon buckets full of water is not the most fun experience. That being said, I have seven tanks I do water changes on, so that's a lot of buckets. :p However, since your tank isn't fully cycled (mine are), I would suggest at least 30-40%, or even bigger, depending on how quickly you want your tank to cycle. 50% water changes won't do any harm, and will actually help your cycle finish up.

Ok cool will try a 30-40% water change and then test 24hrs later. Hopefully it will then be more or less ready. Thanks for the help. Ill keep you posted as to how well its going.

ppm and mg/L are the same thing when dealing with dilution in water as water's density is 1g/mL.

those nitrites are quite high as well, but they should come down when you change water to fix the nitrates.

Ok thanks geoff. I will do a water change later on today. If the parameters are ok after the change, can I still introduce my fish?
