Hello
I have been keeping some cardinal tetras for about 6 months now and so far I have had one casualty. Not sure what caused the one loss but it was only about 2 weeks in to the new tank so I put it down to stress.
So 6 months on the rest of the fish are fine. The colours are very bright so the fish seem fine.
I have been reading a bit more about the subject and I am starting to get a little worried.
My Ph of my tap water is about 8 on average. As im injecting CO2 along with IE the Ph drops to about 7.2 or so. Is this Ph fine for cardinals? As I believe there natural habitat can get as low as 4Ph.
My biggest concern is KH and GH at this point. My local water is about 14KH and 16-18GH according to my API test kits. My local water does come from underground vaults/caves which are limestone so the high GH does not surprise me.
“Some articles advise against high GH as it can cause high osmotic pressure and lead to premature kidney failureâ€. _ this is a quote from a mod in the species index under cardinals so I don’t doubt it authenticity.
It sounds serious and would like to know if it is a bit deal.
Since I have played my part in removing the fish from their natural habitat I feel obliged to recreate it as best as possiable and provide my fish with the best possiable conditions possiable.
Should I invest in a RO machine to remove the hardness is the main question. Osmotics.co.uk sell kits for about £80 accounts for extra media and pipes etc so money is not an options.
Sorry for the essay but I am looking fore some reassurances and advise on how to proceeded.
Regards
Dave
