Fish Herder
I've been reading a lot of posts about trying to change your water to fit your fish, or only buying fish to fit your water. I'm a complete beginning, so I'm going for 'easy' fish (zebra danios, neon tetras, dwarf gourami, bronze corys and some shrimps). They're all fairly tolerant according to the books and my water fits their profile except that its very hard. People suggested RO units but that sounded like a lot of money and complications for a newbie. Since i had nothing better to do tonight (!), I tested my tap water, and then the water out of my Brita filter....
Levels.....NO3.......NO2........GH.............KH................Ph
Tap........10............0............>16 deg......3 deg...........7.2
Filter......10.............0............> 6 deg.......0 deg...........6.4
So, finally, my question..... does it seem like a good idea to mix my tap water and filter water 50/50 when i do water changes, with the idea of bringing the GH down? This might lower the Ph to neutral, but this shouldn't be a problem to my prospective fishies (still cycling). Does anyone know if this would cause any problems?
Would appreciate any input!
