WHAT IS THE RULE OF THUMB FOR WATER CHANGES FOR A REEF TANK.I HAVE A 125 REEF TANK. HOW MANY GALLONS AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY WATER.I CHANGED FROM FISH ONLY TO REEF TANK ABOUT A MONTH AGO.
although its not just removing crap- there are trace elements in fresh SW that are depleted over time- a water change will replenish these.
personally i do 10% a week via an automated system so i just open the valve from my SW store and it is pumped into the tank- a level sensor on the tank detects a rise in level and pumps waste water out to keep the tank level constant (this means some "new" water is also lost but i add more than 10% to allow for this)

thats sounds like what i want to do.i have a rough in plumbing for water and drain next to my tank. can you tell me what kind of unit to put in to filter the water. it's alot of work bringing water down 3 flights of strairs.although its not just removing crap- there are trace elements in fresh SW that are depleted over time- a water change will replenish these.
