Since adding fish I have a  low reading of nitrite and am thinking of doing a 10% water change daily. Can the water to be added be prepared in advance?

I always put the water I'm adding into a 5 gallon bucket (used only for that purpose) and add dechlorinator. You should also try to get the water to the same temp as what's in the tank.

Sure can.

In fact, when I do my weekly water changes (I've got a 46 and a 10g tank), I will also fill up a couple of 1-gallon "milk jugs" (actually, they were originally store-bought RO water) with water, and add dechlor to the jugs. Then, I use those to top off the tanks during the week.

Water conditioners work instantly, as soon as you add it the water is officially dechlorinated. You can age the water if you want, but there isn't any benefit to it.

If are always having low levels of nitrite, I would make sure your filter is sufficient for the load and that you are not overstocked. If so, then get a larger filter and maybe also remove some fish.

:) Thanks all for your help.

I didn't know there were different types of dechlorinaters. Which ones are for heavy metal?

:( I'm a bit confused on stocking - calculators suggest 54cm for 10 uk g
I have
a siamese fighter
2 dwarf gouramies
1 clown plec
2 panda corries
Would like to add three more corries and a shoal of of 6 small fish such as harlequin rasbora?
Are they compatible with the rest?

I think that if you add more you will be overstocked, of you are not already.

Clown plecs although not massive get bigger than what 10UK allows for IMO and are very messy. People also say that they shouldn't be kept with cories in such a small tank as they can be territorial. Adding 9 more fish would be way too much IMO.

Thanks for that.
How do you calculate stocking

Many people go on 1" of fish per gallon. I don't go on that personally in bigger tanks, I go on parameters and whether the fish look to have enough room.

The only fish I imagine to be too big (and messy) for you tank is the clown plec. Maybe that;s why you are showing nitrItes?
