This is probably a daft question, but when you do a water change do you have to warm the water up so it is the same temprature as the tanks? Or if you add it slowly does it sort of adjust?

try and get water as close to temp by adding hot water..... sudden changes in temp could shock the fish and cause more probs. when doing a water change i usually get water as close to same water temp as possible.

It's best to get it as close as you can to the tank temp. The larger the water change, the more important it is and naturally, smaller tanks are more susceptible. I am having the opposite problem right now. It has been so hot here that the "cold" water out of my tap last night was 85.2 degrees while my tank temp is about 78.5. I did a 15 gallon water change on my 75 gallon using my python and the temp went up almost 2 degrees but all fish are fine. For the 29 gallon, I only changed only 5 gallon so I ran that in a bucket and used ice to cool it down to the proper temp.

What I do is use a thermomator to get the exact temp, but some people only use their hand to guess if it's the proper temp.

Thanks guys, I kinda thought you might have to warm it up (or cool it down), and already have thermometers etc.
Still not set up yet, just tryng to think of all the questions andget answers before the disasters happen

I use a digital thermometer. I stick it in the tank to get the reading there and then match (within a degree) the water I'm putting in to that using the same thermometer. I have digitals in the tanks already but they can give different readings (as much as 1.5 degrees difference) so I make sure I'm measuring both the tank and the fill water with the same one.

I add hot water to my cold water and use conditioner before adding them to my tank. I use my hand to fell the temperature as long it isn't too much difference(like 1-2c of difference is kind of acceptable).
