hi instead of doing the normal weekly water change would it be possible to run a
continuous feed (of the correct water of course) and a run off to drain.

does anyone think this would remove the same amount of nitrates or would it cause any
other problems.
thanks for any help

while i can't comment on the logistics of it the theory is sound and if you had enough water being replaced every day you would also not need to filter the tank as the ammonia and nitrite would be maintained at a low level.

The only problem with this theory is that its a massive waste of energy. Remember, the input water all needs to be heated. In the summertime this isn't that big a deal as tapwater arrives lukewarm, but in the winter... I know I wouldn't want the electricity bill for that

wouldn't wanna do it if your on a water meter either!! :hyper:

like i hinted at, the logistics are mind boggling and it would probably cost an enormous amount. but just talkign abotu the basic theory of it it could work. remember andywg saying he's considered it before

hi thanks for the replies. i dont think water costs come into it as i would have a restricted flow
to mimic the equivelent water change.

As to heating the water, as its a minimal flow i probably wouldnt need to, but the water will be in a tank anyway
so just like the cost for another fish tank really.

I have five tanks up and running at the momment and it takes so much time lugging buckets about, that i wanted to automate it, cost isnt an issue anyway. just wanted to make sure it wouldnt harm any fish.

A slow automated change (doing say 20-40% of the water volume a week) would not be a problem. Ideally you just have a drain system as if you are draining to a sump (either drill or overflow) and then have a supply going in. Once the supply make the tank level above that desired the water will overflow into the drain creating a constant water change.

I seem to recall an article on MFK where one its mods set up just such a system.
