Ok As I said it's a fish invert compatability thing. I was just wondering whether anyone has had experience with pitol shrimp-goby symbiosis. I thought it would be neat, and I was wondering whether certainb pistols would only go with certain gobies or whether they aren't as particular. The species of pistol I was considering was the candy pistol (Alpheus yaldwyni) and as for the goby I wasn't sure what to look for in compatibility. So if anyone can help clarify that would be great.

From the basic research i've done:

Candy Stripe Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus yaldwyni) is compatible with -
  • Yasa Hashe (Stonogobiops yasha)
  • Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)
  • Orange Spot Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris guttata)
  • Yellow Rose Antenna Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes)
  • Randall's Goby
Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus yaldwyni) is compatible with -
  • Yasa Hashe (Stonogobiops yasha)
  • Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)
  • Orange Spot Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris guttata)
Japanese Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bisincisus) is compatible with -
  • Yasa Hashe (Stonogobiops yasha)
  • Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)
  • Pink Spotted Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus leptocephalus)
Bullseye Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus soror) is compatible with -
  • Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)
This is only what I can gather from research on the internet, there may be more pairings and this is in no way a guarantee that these will pair together. In fact nearly everywhere I looked said that the Bullseye wouldn't pair with anything yet I have one and it has paired with my yellow watchman

HTH

Ok I IDed the shrimp for sure (ok almost for sure, the LFS got them under the name alpheus sp.) but I picked him up and he looks like a tiger pistol shrimp (alpheus bellulus). And they seem to be pretty compatible with Stonogobiops, Amblyeleotris, and Cryptocentrus. So I'm going to get the LFS (since I work there) to bring in a few gobies (other than sand sifters) so I can find a partner.

Don't put money on them pairing as some do, some don't. If you go with a 'known' pairing then obviously the chances of a pair are higher but not guaranteed. If you want a definite pair the best way is to buy them that way (costs a bit more though).

If you know the LFS owners the best thing to do is get them to put them in tanks together and see but buy them a separate prices :p
