today:

the yeast is going in my aquarium,,

i quickly make water change 95% with the fishes inside the aquarium...

that's is a warning for me and for everyone which wanna to really keep a good aquarium....


i use yeast a suger to pruduce CO2..

but i will not use it anymore,

i will get a CO2 bottle and defucer,,, will be very SAFE..

I wouldn't tell people not to use yeast.... just to be careful with it.

Don't overfill the bottle....
Use a check valve....
Make sure the bottle can't turn over where the stuff will come up into the aquarium
Use a second empty bottle inline between the reactor and the tank to catch any bad stuff that could possibly come up

i dont see whats wrong with yeast. like chkltcow said, use a 2nd bottle in between and make sure it goes a little past the cap just incase

also instead of using air stones on the end that the line enters the aquarium. use wooden Diffuses.

many thousands of planted tank keepers have used yeast successfully for years without trouble. Your advice is a little strong based on one experience.

Airstones of any kind are not really a lot of good. The CO2 will just bubble to the surface and escape before it can dissolve. It is not very soluable in water. You need to keep the CO2 in contact with the water for longer. A common, and easy DIY arrangement is to bubble the CO2 into an inverted cup or similar.

I inject CO2 into the inlet of my external filters.

No, he has a point. It happened to me and it can and will wipe out all of your fish.

If you haven't already, kamel_007, out as many airstones/powerheads in your tank as possible to increase surface gas exchange otherwise the yeast will use up all the oxygen in the water and kill your fish.

I made a post about this a while ago trying to emphasize the importance of safety measures but it was never pinned and just disapeared after a bit.

I seriously propose to the mods that there should be a sticky explaing the hazards of diy CO2, what can be done to prevent disasters, and how to cope if there is one, because they DO happen.

i agree with LL, just be carefull, a check valve is always advised when i read around with the DIY homebrew pages.

am i correct in assuming that the check valve is much much more important then a second mid bottle ? because the second bottle could fill up in case of a spill and the rest is you know

I have always used a non-return valve, and a plenum bottle.

I don't believe the warning should be pinned.

Firstly, you only have to read the questions that appear here daily to realise that few people if any read pinned topics anyway. The same is true of the fish profiles, which answer many of the questions appearing almost every hour, and the articles...

Second, if we had a pinned article warning of the dangers of everything that could remotely pose a danger, we would have no room for threads, and everyone would be scared off of keeping fish at all.

Thousands and thousands of people use yeast/sugar CO2 generators and have done for many many years without ever having had a single problem. A few have had a disaster, most often inexperienced people who just took the wrong advice, or simply did it wrong.

i was informed that equal amounts of bicarb to yeast will act as a stabiliser, anyone got any scope with this?

i've only been using co2 for a couple months now and have never had probs with it...

Check valves simply prevent a back siphon. They will not stop yeast from entering your tank if you set it up improperly.

Co2 will not reduce the amount of oxygen in your tank. The main peril is ph fluctuation.
