Do you have a spare air pump?
I have a sponge air powered filter running in my tank, whole lot cost me about £15

Some ladies tights over intake of your filter held in place with a rubber band will make it safe and no real cost :good:

I use an old aquarium net that has tiny holes. I have dwarf shrimp and never find any babies in the filter anymore. Plus the netting still allows for good flow of water so it doesn't get clogged. (I just have to pull large plant debris off every week). I cut the old net out, and attached it to the intake valve with a hard plastic zip tie. Cost=free

As long as the netting holes are teeny. Some of the larger nets have holes that baby shrimp can easily get through.
