At my new LFS they have a huge tank full af small female bettas. I really want to buy one because this is the only store i my area that sells females. But i have a problem. The females seem to be very young and you rellly can't tell what type of betta thay are. When i asked the worker there what type of bettas they were he said they females like the sign said!!! then i asked specifically what type crowntail etc. and he sai i didn't know what i was talking about bettas were bettas.

I think this particular worker should stick to working the cash register but i can't say much they do require you to submit a water sample , tank size list of other occupants and they only sell 1 gal bowls and up none of those foolish betta cups.

is there anyway for me to distinguish the type of females when they are young or will i just have to take my chances and just get one.

this fish store has really good clean tanks and i've very rarely seen a dead fish in their tanks.

I noticed that my local Petsmart started carrying females bettas, and some of them were crowntails! On closer inspection, they looked as though they were the ones that the breeder didn't want......there were uneven points on the tail; might have been the "oops" of the batch.

Most LFS carry plain VT females, but who knows. If they are too young to tell, I'd just pick one I like and then see what she turns out to be.

i guess i'll just have to take my chance with what i get. i'll let you know when i get hame if i got one or not. i'm going in a few minutes.

Good luck! You could also just buy a 10 gallon and get 4 or 5 girls and try your luck with that.

can female bettas be put in tanks with community fish? what are you going to put her in?
Females can usually be put in with community fish, but then again there are always stories of that one mean bully girl that terrorizes every fish in the tank. As long as you don't have any bad fin nippers females should do fine in a community with other fish. Oh yea, and no other labrynth fish as well hehe. I have 12 female bettas in my 120 gallon with all kinds of community fish and they are doing very good.

I have a couple females together with a male guppy and they all love each other. I had a similar situation where I just chose a young female and she just started developing her crowntail

just got back. I got another male. He's got a blue body and his fins start red and end blue also he's green around his head. i'll take a pic if i can ever get my camera working. I went to get the female but alas they got a new shipment and they were sick when they were put in the huge tank all the females were in. anyway they are treating the tank and said they won't sell them for at least a week, because of their guarentee i guess they don't want to have to replace too many bettas. If i had to have gotten the female she would have been tried in my 55 gal or 10 gal community tanks or if that didn't work in a large 1.5 or 2 gal bowl.

you should see the tank of females at the lfs. the person working there (a more knowledgable one than last time) said the tank is 75 gallons and the shipment they recieved was over 250 females. what a beautiful tank, overstocked but beautiful.
