I have purged my 29 gallon tank and am now restocking for a PEACEFUL community tank. So far I have ...well, just look at my sig  . What would ya'll suggest putting with these guys? My goal is a happy, peaceful, low maintenance tank. No more stressful semi-aggressive junk! I have a male guppy at home that is currently living in a one gallon jar with every-other-day water changes. Could he go in, or no?

Hi mhoward1999 :)

What kind of cory cat do you have? Since these are schooling fish, you will need to get several more as companions for him.

Since you will have plants, a group of otos might do well for you and since they are so tiny, they take up barely any room. Here's an article about them:

And, go put that guppy in the tank right now, before he gets ich or something from being in an unheated jar. :D

I agree, that guppy should go in that tank asahp (as soon as humanly possible!). Also, I agree with Inch about you needing more cories and otos are a great idea in a mid sized planted tank, they will love it in there! Just be sure to get a little group to keep them happy.

Really cool fish are hatchet fish, they are peaceful and occupy a usually unused part of the tank.

HTH and good luck with it. :D

:D Cories are one of my goals. Is there anything I need to know about pandas? That's what I want, though I have never seen them in my LFS. Do you think they need to take presidence over growing the rasbora school? As far as I know my cory is just a plain old cory. He is not an albino. His color is kindof an iridescent grey/green/ishblue/ish :dunno: ... Looks like a natural color... I didn't know there were different kinds- just different colors. I guess I need to go do some more research.

Guppy...done!

Hatchet fish and swordtails are what I wanted when I went into the LFS. My guy said he wouldn't combine the two. He said the swordtails might torment the hatchets. Of course, I did tell him to only sell me fish he would tell me with at least 98% certainty that they would get along happily! :alien: I had him tell me suggestions of what could go with the hatchets, and what could go with the swordtails, and I didn't like hardly any of the hatchet suggestions, but I liked most of what he suggested for the swordtail companions. What's your take?

Hi mhoward1999 :)

I'm happy to learn that you like corys. They are fine little fish that are great citizens in any peaceful community tank. They are social fish and do need to be kept in schools. You will not see them at their best unless they have friends to play with. Unlike many schooling fish, these guys actually interact with each other.

Pandas seem to be one of the more delicate of them, but can work for you if you keep your water clean and the bottom well vacuumed.

There are many varieties of cory cats, but some of them are harder to find than others. Here's a link you might find interesting:

I think your cory might be a bronze cory, C. aeneus. If you click on the picture perhaps you will be able to tell for sure.

I'll be looking forward to seeing your posts in the Catfish Cradle. :D

:p Blaaah, blaaah, blaah! :D I am so sick of guppies! I have had them twice now, and they are just so prolific!!! I gave away all the females, and then the males fought, so I gave them away, too. I just kept one... my favorite. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I do think males are very pretty, but I don't like the females, and you have to have them to make it work...

Thanks for your suggestions and links. I can't wait to check them out. Keep the suggestions coming! :shifty:

Wow! Those otos really do sound like the perfect algae eaters! How many do you think would be good in my tank, based on tank size? How do you tell them from CAE in the pet stores? They look so sililar and I have been told that pet stores often mislabel them.

In color, my cory looks most like this one, but he doesn't have the long nose like the pic. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/calli...ydora/390_1.php Maybe this one? http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/calli...ydora/476_2.php or this: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/calli...ydora/470_1.php I am definitely overwelmed! I had no idea.....

Lol. :p

That would be a bronze cory you have. Their kind of a shiny pearlish colour. They look cute don't they?

Yes, he's an animated little feller! I don't want to have a lot of my tank's bio-load to be in corys. I am thinking that I should have three. Would I be significantly better off if I stay with the bronze, or can I mix them up. I like pandas and the white with black spots throughout. I do want to do what's best for what I already have, though.
