I was told last night that the reason some peoples fish die after they buy them from wal-mart is that they pass through the security booth and they get magnitized is that true? I bought some guggies last night and put the female in a breeding box this morning i was a proud parent of 9 babies

Walmart fish tend to die because the store keeps them in bad conditions more often than not, too smaller tanks and bad water quality conditions and over crowding, they also don't tend to medicate their fish when they get deseased as they don't see the point in medicating fish with meds more expensive than what they are worth, which is just plain wrong.
You should avoid buying heavily pregnant livebearers as they journey from the lfs to the new tank is extra stressful for them and more than often cause birth complications and death for the mother fish, have you removed the female from the breeding net?

I wouldn't think the magnetizing problem is true. It's mostly what Toxis said, they don't take very good care of their fish. Fish simply are not their main focus. Anyway, other fish stores I go to have a magnetizing thingy, and their fish have ALWAYS been very healthy for me.

Congrats on the babies too! As Toxis said though, next time you might want to avoid buying very pregnant fish. But now you know for next time!

Myth! How many times have you gone through the sensors and not died? I would not say buying a heavly prenant fish from any store was a good idea (one of my first fish buys was from a store I hold in high regards and the female Swordtail died with a belly filled with fry). It would come down to the store in question having at least one person who gives a damn about the welfare of the fish they are selling. Sometimes you get the Bear and sometimes the Bear gets you!

I would also like to say that in my experience buying fish from a well established MOM and POP type fish store that has been around for ages is the best bet. I have been in fish stores and seen dead/sick fish in the tanks and informed the staff. If they do not make a move to fix the problem at once, I will not buy fish from them and I am also put off at selling them the fry/juvies I take great care in raising for sale.

Some wal mart have good fish people, some don't. The one close to me has fish people working at it, so fish are medicated and not sold, and the filter system is altered so the water isn't going from tank-tank. They also have signs up everywhere letting people know how big goldfish grow.. The only bad part is the bettas... they have the classic sign saying bettas can live in small amounts of water.

I can say for sure that the security sensors do not hurt the fish. I have carried live fish through airport security and I can promise you airport security has much more powerful systems than Walmart. I will say however, that you don't ever want to admit to TSA that you have live fish, they won't let you bring them through. They have to be smuggled, either inside carry on luggage, or bagged and in a large styrofoam cup with a lid and a straw, and with fresh water poured on top of the bagged fish. (this is in case TSA makes you drink out of the cup to prove it isn't hazardous etc.) LOL Where there are good looking fish, there is a way to bring em home!

I bought to pregnant fish from walmart, both died before giving birth, one while giving birth.

never buy fish from walmart. they cater to the kids who just want a quick pet. ive worked there before a while back. DO NOT BUY FISH FROM THERE> supplies is ok. they got good deals.

Sounds like a place we have over here in the uk called pets at home, I bought some guppies from their and at the time didnt notice the white spot, - when i did notice I went back to the shop to buy treatment and to check the tank out all the guppies in their tank had it - i told the assistant who didnt care - the fish contaminated my tank and within 3weeks all my guppies and fry were dead

I agree that fish from walmart die more frequently due to the conditions they're in, and instead of making those conditions better, my local super walmart has upped their dead fish guarantee to 90 days! I couldn't believe that.

I go to petsmart...they treat their fish very well and they are nice and healthy looking.
I didn't even know walmart sold fish..haha I learned something new today!

oh yea, petsmart is the place for common fish... I find that the best place for fish that run on the rare side is petco if you have one by you.

Wow I totally jinxed myself. Lately Petsmart has been selling sick fish... 3 fish i bought all died from sickness...hahaha way to go, Sarah.

ive actually had good luck with fish from walmart, i bought a synodontis cat and a pleco there over a year ago, the pleco finally died a few months ago and the syno is doing fine
also i got a killifish there thats been in one of my tanks for a few moths and is doing great.
once i bought an austrailian rainbow from there, the person who bagged it marked it as a goldfish and i got it for 13 cents! too bad it didnt last that long
