here are some pics of rio's walk. we usually take him in a huge wood for ages but today this had to do, though its not too bad. Its down a narrow pathway and then it goes out onto a track which is used only for delivery trucks but none today cos its sunday so its fine. Plus there and fields either side so he has a good run. They have recently put barriers up to stop the travellers and Rio loves to jump over them.
Rio is a springer spaniel and as you can see he is undocked :good:
At home in the conservatory:

Looks like someone needed to have a bath after his walk!! lol

I have a question about docking (which I'm assuming is cutting the tails?) why do people do this to dogs? I really don't like the look of it at all, and it must be so painful for the poor animal.

Lovely photos though geo!!!

Wow I wish our dogs were allowed to be off lead like that here.

We have some beautiful places to let our dogs run, but the law in Melbourne is very very tough now, no dogs off leads, unless its an off lead park (they are hard to find) due to constant dog attacks.

We have a pit bull problem in Victoria, they are trying to cull them out, but its not working.

Hi, there are a couple of reason why people used to do it. One is that when springers (and other dogs) were used in the fields as...well....gundogs, apparently their tails could get shredded in the undergrowth, which is a pretty pointless reason nowadays because we dont go out catching our dinner like that any more, and if people still do it for sport i dont think the dog should have to suffer for that too :grr: another reason is in fighting dogs they used to/ do have their tails docked to make smaller targets, again, this is a pointless argument as dog fighting is banned and very cruel.

And for the argument of them still getting damaged tails while going through the undergrowth, I have never seen any dog go through the undergrowth more than Rio, the only reason i could get pics of him is because there isnt much undergrowth there. We usually take him into woodland which is very dense apart from the path and has lots of undergrowth, and we hardly ever see him on the walk, he just runs and runs through it and we occasionally see him dash past, and then at the end of the walk we call him and he comes back. He has never had any problems with his tail being damaged.
Hope this helps, and thanks for the compliment :good:
Great photos Geo, looks like he enjoyed his walk!
thanks stang ;)

:( omg thats really harsh, i never knew they did that over there! i really hope that doesnt happen here, there has recently been a scare over here about dangerous dogs (which to be honest personally i think its not as bad as they make out, the press and media just blew it all out of proportion).

If Rio wasnt allowed off the lead i dont know what we would do, its everything to him, he looks forward to his walk all day and he is always waiting for it, and he can't stand to be on the lead for any length of time, that track that he was on is literally just a few houses away, and we take him to the woods in the car.

I guess if that did happen we would have to try and find off lead parks.

Of course the cull isn't working, it isn't pit bulls that are the problem, it's the owners - and tbh more labs bite people than pits and you dont see campaigns for them to be culled. Shocking.

Rio's gorgeous - you can see that cheeky look in his eyes ;) Beautiful pics too - more please!

Picture 8 deserves a POTM nom where he is jumping the barrier towards you.
I am also anti docking but over here docking is stopping anyway. No Pups born after April 1st can be entered in any shows :good:

thanks for the nomination grahamsokel :good:

I am very glad about the move the kennel club has made, i think it was partly them that was 'fuelling' the problem and pressurising owners to have their puppies docked if they want to show them. When I was watching crufts they said that some breeders are even going to give up breeding dogs that have to be stopped being docked as they think it completely changes the breed and ruins it, and i think that is digusting attitude and personally i would rather see them not breed/show anyway.
