55 gallon Paraguay themed
20250113_212452.jpg

All of the plants and fish are found within the Paraguay region, particularly in the Rio Paraguay and Parana basins. Sources such as GBIF, EOL, and iNaturalist were used to research the occurrences of the plants and fish for this setup. This set up has been running for over a year now, but had been a previous setup that had had multiple failures and restarts. I am happy to say this set up, which was started back from scratch, has been unproblematic and likely my favourite setup to date. This is a subtropical region of South America, and temperatures as low as 60s aren't abnormal for the area. This tank recently had a heater mishap (somehow it got unplugged) and temperatures dipped down well below 64F and the fish had no problems and had even been spawning regardless.

Stock:
15 hoplisoma paleatum
20 hyphessobrycon elachys
9 bario forestii/sanctaefilomenae
2 apistogramma borelli

Plants:
Heternanthera zostifolia
Potamogeton gayi
Sagittaria subulata
Bacopa australis

Hardscape: round river rocks and driftwood collected from local freshwater river.

Temperature: 72-74F
pH 7
GH 5Ā°
KH 3Ā°
TDS 107

Light: JC&P Full Spectrum LED

Filtration: Fluval Fx4 Canister

Heater: Hitop 300w (only plugged in from December to March)

Wavemaker: 528gph Sunsun Brand

Fertilizer: The Plant Guy's All in One fertilizer, a Canadian only product. Comparable to NilocG Thrive for much lower a price.

Water is changed weekly, 75-90% is removed.

This is my 330l tank, with a Fluval 407 filter. The fluval T300 heater is set at 24 degrees c. A wave maker and protein skimmer keep the water moving and 2 Fluval plant 3.0 LED light bars provide the lighting. The tank is planted with a variety of different plants, none of which I know the names of. The substrate is gravel and aqua soil, covered with black sand. The decor is mostly bog wood, with some pebbles and 3 caves made from plantpots.

Residents in the tank are:
15 ember tetras
9 celestial pearl danios
10 Pygmy corys
10 chilli rasboras
5 green neon tetras - I want to add more, but havenā€™t been able to find any locally
2 otocinclus
2 Amano shrimp
60ish cherry shrimp
3 Nerite snails
6 rabbit snails
2 dwarf African frogs

This is my 130L tank, which is a grow-out for my Mary River cod and Cross River bichir. It has a Tidal 110 HOB filter as well as a sponge filter for filtration. The heater is set to 26 degrees. The tank is not scaped in any way but is heavily planted and I add wish to add more and more over timeā€™s not really scaped. I have a thick substrate because I am very indecisive about what color of sand I like, there is a layer of Aquasoil, then gravel, some play sand, followed by red river sand, and finally some black sand. I set this tank up last October originally as a community tank, but it has gone through many variations. I personally like a clean look in my non-breeding tanks, so I do my best to remove any mulm or debris.

Stock:
1 Tuegelsi Bichir
1 Mary River Cod

Plants:
Bolbitus
Annubius
Java Fern
Assorted Swords
Assorted Crypts
Assorted Stem Plants
