My other half is desperate to get a Volitan Lionfish for a 350L corner tank, but we have two kids, a toddler and a newborn. I think it's a bit risky in case there is a freak accident and the kids get stung (im thinking toys+glass=fish on floor, but I guess its the same risk with the rest of the tanks). Am I being an over protective mother here or not?!

Also, are they easy to keep? I was thinking white coral substrate, white ocean rock, and a huge external filter and skimmer. Would it be ok to filter it the tank with that equipment as I dont want live rock? And if I could be ok without the live rock would I still need additional powerheads?

It would be just the one fish in there (so would I need a CUC?)

Thanks in advance xx

they are pretty easy to take care off, and yes you could filter the tank that way, ive done the same thing for a lionfish tank at work, white coral gravel, white coral skeletons, filter at back with skimmer. you just need to cycle the tank first, if using live rock then that will cycle the tank, with just fish only im pretty sure your have to do a fishless cycle to mature the sponges.

you should aim for about 10x flow if its just fish only.

no need for a cuc but with just a lion im sure you could get away with some ive not heard of them eating snails or hermits so they could be an option.

Lionfish + CUC = Bigger lionfish and no CUC.

The lionfish will eat anything it can fit in its mouth. Don't bother wasting your money on a cleanup crew.

A lion fish will have any shrimp, and some crabs. I'm not shure if it will eat smails though...

Volitans = easy to keep, difficult to house.

A 350L corner tank will not be big enough to house an adult volitan. These fish can and do break through the 12" mark in captivity. When at that size in length they are close to it in width with the wide spread pectoral fins and they bulk out nicely. An adult volitan is really deserving of something in the 6x2x2 (feet) range.
