Ok so I started up my tank and have the plants and everything, added a new plant the otherday and after a little while i noticed some very small snails, I didnt worry at first as their were a few, the other day there seemed to be more of them so i took some out just to lower the numbers.

They are really small and theirs about 5 or 6 in there now, is this a bad thing? could it affect the water or is it helping the plants or anything?
I noticed a small amount of brown things (probably droppings) forming on plant leaves and on a stone too is this harmful to the water?

just looking for some information really :)

No fish added yet either just starting my fishless cycle

Thanks

if you are doing a fishless cycle the leave them in imo because there waste will speed it up

i agree that they are good for cycling the tank.. but when you have fish they are just more ammonia.. which is not good.. there are things you can buy to get rid of snail.. i would wait until you cycle finishes.. and then get rid of them.. they reproduce like rats and will do harm to your plants if there are too meny.

I say leave them be. We've had pond snails before and they were great little algae eaters that never did any damage to any of the plants. We never had a problem w/ them overpopulating for some reason, but they did lay eggs all over the place. If you don't want them, then def pick them out though.

leave them in, most snails wont eat live plant matter. if you do get a population explosion, tie a piece of cucumber to a stone and sink it overnight. the next morning it will have loads fo snails on for you to pull out
