I just got the  CT last night. He looked fine last night, but his swimming seemed a little off. I chalked it up to acclimating to his new home. This morning he started with a little whitish slime/cotton developing on his head. Right away I threw in some salt. About an hour later, I noticed some small spots on 1 side (same whitish film/cotton) Then I made him some fresh water with Jungle fungus clear. It has been 6-8 hours since I first saw the stuff. It looks like it is even worse. He is not swimming much, 1 sidw looks worse than the other. It seems to be going very quickly. I don't want him to die. I have about 30 bettas. Got my first about 4 months ago. None have ever been sick. (Except the one that was shipped to me sick, and he died overnight, that first night.) I now have him in a gallon container, sitting in a 5.5 gallon that has heater up to 81. I hope that will kill off some of the infection. I can't get any more meds until I get off work tomorrow at 2pm. What else should I try? I have: Jungle Fungus Clear, Mela Fix, Quick Cure, and table salt (used the last of the aquarium salt on him this morning) Is there anything I can do? Will he be ok?

I posted a pic of him last night. (Black Ct W/Steel BF Pattern)

I'm sorry to hear he's having so many problems. :/

I suspect he's suffering from columnaris.
Have a read here:
http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/disease/p/columnaris.htm

It is a nasty, nasty disease that's hard to beat. But it CAN be done.
Get some maracyn as soon as you can, and drop the heat down to the low 70's. I think I'd take him out of the water and leave his tank go at room temp. If you have some stress coat or prime, get that in there right away. This stuff can creep over their bodies overnight so you'll want to get him the meds ASAP.

Good luck to you!

Tetracycline is also supposed to be highly effective for Columnaris.

Y'know, now that I read that, i think that that is what Wilbur had! he had the fungus on him, but his mysterious fin-rottish problem would be in that description too, because they kept falling off even when he had not the strength to bite them.

BTW, good luck to your guy I hope he makes it *prays for your boy* he's an awesome looking fish, just hope he's strong! :/

That is what I was thinking too. There were a few things that seemed to fit, but nothing seemed to fit exactly. He survived the night. Now the Red fish I posted the pic of also has it. I was surprised, all the fish looked good when I picked these 2 up. I am on my way out now to get the Maracyn. Now I'm even happier that I picked these 2. I noticed the fuzz right away. If they had stayed at the store, they would probably be dead now. I let everyone know how it goes. I hope it will be good news.

THANKS everyone

I got them (Black Ct, and Red Comb Tail) into some Maracyn yesterday afternoon.
I got up this morning the black was swimming, and even ate. THe red looked like it had fur. I changed his water, and put in some fresh meds. I got home from work a little while ago, and the red is lying on his side on the bottom of the bowl. It's not looking good. I put him in fresh meds, but I don't think he will make it. If he lives the night, I think he will make it.

You're doing what you can for him, just remember that. The Maracyn will take care of body fungus, too, if his immune system will let him fight it off along with the meds.
Sometimes they can appear really healthy when you get them and the illnesses just come on - sometimes they're festering, and when you take them home and put them into a new home it's stressful for them lowering their immune systems. That's why quarantining is usually recommended for community tanks.

If he doesn't make it, you can rest assured you did everything you could for him and no matter who would have wound up with him the same thing would most likely have happened. He knows you're trying.

Best of luck to him, we're all thinking of him!

Well, I just got home, and he is gone. :byebye: I had been thinking of what to name him. I never offically decided. Now that he has passed, he has to have a name. I had thought of a few, and kept comming back to 1. Sunset. So that is/was his name. I am finding comfort in knowing that he had at least 1 solid day where he could swim all around, and stretch his fins. I know he would have died without that at the store. He is the red one I posted in the thread below.

Goodbye SUNSET. You will be missed. :-(

Now I get to go back to PETCO And scream that my fish died in 3 days. He will be hard to replace.

On a happier note, the black one seems to be much better. Keeping fingers crossed. Holding breath until sat. (when the meds will be done)

I am so sorry your little guy died *hug*

I hope the other one gets well :flex: Good luck and keep us posted on his condition

Sorry to hear he's gone.
You're absolutely correct about him having a nice place to be for his last little while.
Bye bye, little Sunset. :(
