ok I have a big problem here, 2 days ago I bought 3 mollies from petco to go in my 10 gallon tank along with my betta (they all got along fine) and last night everything seemed fine, they all ate. well this morning i woke up to my betta with his head very swollen and peeling off, his eyes are sunken in and do to his bloated head he is floating at the surface, but still swimming. I figured because I stupidly didnt quarentine the mollies before I added them, that one of them gave him this disease. I know now who was the culprit as I just found one of the mollies dead in the very same way my betta looks now..except my bettas still alive.
I took him out and put him in a hospital tank with some bettamax and salt..here are some pics.
does ANYONE know what the hell kind of disease this is???ive never had something like this happen, and I love this guy so much :-(
heres how he looks now:

the poor guy is swimming around trying his hardest to get under the water, but cant..

btw is there anything I can do to the 10 gallon that the fish contaminated? 2 mollies are still in there and seem fine along with a corycat..I added extra salt but dont know what else to do :/

Looks like a job for MethyBlue by Aquatronics.

You should isolate him in a small container with shallow water - maybe 2 inches so he won't exert himself when he tries to get at the surface.

 I'm so sorry to hear about that bittersweet. I never heard of that probelm before! I used to buy all of my fish at petco, but one time I brought home a fish and it carried some mysterious diesese. I ended up losing 14 of my fish in two weeks! Now, I never get anymore fish from Petco. I hope your betta gets better. Good luck! :)

that happened to one of my bettas.

His head swelled up, I put in salt and melafix (it was all i had here in aus we dont have much for bettas)

But he died over night before i could get anything else for him :(

sorry but i think you are doing all you can do.

I hope he pulls through for you.

Poor little guy

thanks for your kind words...

Itty- I put him in a half gallon container with about 3 inches of water, he keeps freaking out and running into the sides of the container because he cant get his mouth underwater..
I wonder what this mysterious disease is..I hope he makes it through the night

Can you get some Marcyn This may help him the poor fellow. I have found that medicine works better than anything I have ever tried besides the bettamax which is also good to. I will check and see if I can find out what this is for you I hope he gets better. I will do some research tonite and post in the morning.

aww thanks fish keeper, that is wonderful of you to do. I think I will keep him in the bettamax tonight and do a water change tomorrow with methylblue and salt. if you find anything out please let me know, id very much appreciate it.

well the poor thing made it through the night but looks even worse this morning...his whole face looks so decayed its heart wrenching to think how much pain he is in..well its come down to this, do you think I should euthanize him. I really dont see him getting any better, I dont want to do it but I dont wanna see him suffer :-( :-(

I have been on here over two hours and I cant find not one thing that has to do with a fish head swelling.

My betta is doing the same thing right now. Hanging out at the surface of the water. I don't know if his head is swollen but his gill plates are sticking out and his mouth is always open.

If he is always at the surface taking in air it could be gill disease. Swelling is a symptom. I did a lot of research on it not that long ago because i had a baby fish that i figured out had it (it was to late though she was to weak and little I only had 24 hours to diagnose and treat) anyhow i read that Maracyn 2 is the way to treat it...maybe you could try to get ahold of some. Good luck :(

Mabey you could try a gram neg. and a gram pos. like marcyn1 &marcyn2 I have used these together and had real good results before. I think if you don't try something fast you wont be able to save the poor fellow. I hope he gets ok for you.
