soooooooooo i decided to breed 2 of my bettas.
filled an empty 10 gallon tank, halfway, put a half a styro foam cup in there, taped it to one wall of the tank
so that it wouldnt get moved around, put some frogbit in there and a couple frill plants (for female to hide in if needed, and for future babies)
and put the male in, few days later, put female in, in a container inside the tank.
male is one who is always building a bubblenest anyhow, female or not. and he already had one going in the cup, when he saw her it just kept gettin bigger and bigger-
the cup was about half full (thick!!) after one day, a day later, its all around the cup too. and female is showing vertical stripes
i waited another day to be sure,
let her out, they swam around together for a while then it happened..
this is the interesting part..
after spawning, SHE was collecting the eggs. My mom was saying that she was eating them but i watched for a bit and saw that she was picking up several at a time in her mouth then spitting them into the nest. HOW CUTE.
Male stayed by the nest and added more bubbles any chance he could get. They did this a few times, then I was about to go out for a little, and I figured they would still be doing this for a while, I decided to add some more plants, on the opposite end of the tank for the female to hide if needed, in case they were done before I got back and he was bein mean to her. So, as i am lifting the tank lid up..and putting the plants in, I knocked the tank hood INTO the tank..totally ruining EVERYTHING :(
Of course I was SOOO angry with myself. And i took the female out, put her back in her tank, for the time being. Figured I'll start all over, with the conditioning with yummy foods, then when i get back ill change the water out for the boy and start over. So i left him there with the floating cup, and his bubbles everywehre, and eggs on the floor....I come home...and..he has rebuilt the nest. AND the eggs are not on the floor of the tank!
I can see a couple eggs in the nest but they are really hard to see. So i figure he made his nest again and put the eggs back in it!!
So now I am gonna wait, and see what happens, if those eggs actually hatch, also if he put more than just those couple eggs I could see in it and ate the resT? or what.
interesting huh! and SO CUTE. :)

ha! how cute, ive never heard of a female doing that before! great that he rebuilt it and all but erm are you going to be trying to raise them all? ive heard its alot of HARD work, id be intrested to follow if you do though :)

Sounds good. The Male betta sounds very paternal. Also, i know someones whos female betta helped pick up the eggs too.
If you want to breed them again in the future, although she may seem really *maternal* just take her out after the spawn is successful. You dont want to tempt fate...!

Good Luck :) Keep us updated with how the fry are! :)

as i was typing that all it seems he messed up his own nest, or something...its like half gone now. I didnt see any eggs on the floor so i am assuming he ate them or something. I am gona change the water out and wait and do it all over again :(
still a cute story tho :p

How long has it been since they spawned.

Since the female was in the released from the chimney glass did you feed them again?

this was last night, the spawning. I have not fed them yet, no. I am about to get some bloodworm out of the freezer now though

Hmmm. Ok.

You do know that once the eggs have been laid you dont feed the male and remove the female.

Oh i think it was maybe that he saw the female as a threat...

Don't know... Good Luck anyways if you try to spawn them again!

yeah ill just try again in a couple weeks
