Very Basic Fish Only

ditch the hydrometer and get arefractometer much more accurate

I thought you were going for a very basic set up.
you could almost keep corals with that stuff :)

I was thinking basic as in a tank, some sand, a rock, an airstone and a light to see the fish.

choose your lighting carefully, because the marine set up starts with fish and then you will get into it big time and want soft corals, even though mushrooms can cope with average lighting most corals need a minimum t5s, also flow is important with corals, i know you said fish only but believe me you will soon change you mind and want corals, you will

Yeah i have changed my plans i was doing a basic set up but i deleted the post when i found out LR would be ok in dechlorinated water. I am getting 2 39W white (and 1 blue bulb) t5 bulbs in a luminaire anyway. I would go for some soft corals and inverts if i had RO water but i only have dechlorinated tap to work with so the more advanced marine things are out

Yes, but something I learned the hard way. If you have a large tank you will need Metal Halide lighting if you plan to keep any Tangs and most Angels. I had a PowerCompact on a 120 g and have three tangs that all came down with Head & Lateral Line disease from lack of good green algae. AFter replacing the PC with Aqua Light Pro which contains two 150 w Metal halides and four Actinic blue and lunars they are now recovering but it is a long process to feed them organic Romain lettuce and add vitamins every day until the algae grows. Just a heads up.

P.S. I still give them organic green Romaine lettuce as a treat and they eat a huge leaf in no time. I also continue to add vitamins to the water and garlic helps too.

This sounds wrong to me, considering how many people can keep these fish without halides. What you seem to be saying is that you need to offer them a correct diet rather than keep halides. Keeping halides on a tank you aren't going to put corals in is likely to end in an algae filled mess.
