This morning, my neighbor finally convinced me to go check out a new LFS that has opened up a few miles away. He has fallen in love with my saltwater tank, and wants a coral-only nano reef for his house.... but that's a story for another thread.
Anyway, I went in and looked around all the saltwater stuff. Nothing too terribly impressive. Then as we were leaving I decided to have a look in the FW tanks. On a bottom shelf, they had one with guppies and Flag Fish. I had to do a double take, because I have never seen flag fish in stores before, despite how common they should be, being a native North American fish. I asked the shop owner, and he said that yeah, they were Florida Flag Fish, Jordanae Floridae. At $2 each, I bought the pair and brought them home.
Long story short, I didn't realize how beautiful these fish were. I've always seen them referred to just as hair algae eaters.... maintainance fish. They're amazing for freshwater fish..... nice green color to them with hints of red at the edge of each scale, and a black band and spot on their side. They looked better than any of the cichlids they had in the store. If anybody else ever sees these guys in a store, take note. They're small but beautiful fish.
