How do we feed plants to fish? I know silver dollars take 'em greedily, but what if I wanted to give my pleco a zucchini, how would I go about doing that? The book I read said take off the top layer, but do I put it on a spike, like at Petsmart, or do I just drop it in?

I tried feeding raw spinach to my fish, but they couldn't eat it (spit it out). They did eat bread though. Any suggestions for zucchini cucumbers, spinach, or any other vegetables?

Thanks

I feed lettuce and courgette (zuchini) to my fish by pouring boiling water over the veg and leaving it in the boiling water for 1 minute so that it slightly softens. Then i put it into a veggie grip and stick the grip to the side of the tank with the sucker cup on the grip.

Cucumber I do nothing with. Lettuce and other leaves, yes, I to blanch with a little boiling water - if you don't it softens in a day or so anyway, but I don't like it drifting around that long. Peas, shelled and again blanched a little.

well I cut a slice of cucumber about 1/2" thick cut the middle bit out and thread a plant weight through, bend it into a ring and drop it in, within seconds my pleco is sucking the hell out of it!

I also feed my other fish peas which I remove the shells from, squash between my fingers and drop 'em in. :)

This is pretty much what I do. However, I just grab a piece of ready-cut zucchini or cucumber (depending on the day's selection) from the cafeteria here at school when I go have dinner :D My Platys check out the cuke, as do the other fishies. The Pleco is the one I see eating it the most though. He loves it!

Can/should fishies be given carrots? How about beans?

for my plecos, i take a healthy slice of cucumber, about an inch think, remove the outer skin and boil it for 3 mins. If I dont boil it, it floats. once boiled and cooled, i cut cross hatches in the slice , but not deep enough to make it break up, so that the plecos have little peices to latch on to. they usually take the whole thing down in a few hours.

I tried boiling zuchini, it worked and sank, but I didn't see them eating it. It also got really stringy and started breaking apart (probably because I boiled it for too long). I gues I could try boiling cucumbers for about three minutes or so, like someone mentioned, but what type of weight would I use on it?

You really don't need to boil cucumber, and I prefer to not boil zukes, either. As you noticed, it makes them decompose in your tank A LOT faster, and I've never seen a need to do so - my plec and all my loaches have no problem with it raw. I cut a little canoe shaped piece with the seeds scraped out and shove it in a veggie clip which I attach near the bottom of the tank. Before I had veggie clips, I used to wedge it under a piece of slate.

I saw somebody ask about green beans and carrots. Green beans are accpeted by most herbivorous or omnivorous fish. As for carrots, I've never tried the roots, but my fish LOVED carrot greens from my garden this past summer. I didn't blanche them or anything.. just rinsed them off and dropped them in. The barbs and silver dollars, in particular, were crazzzzy about them.

My goldfish LOVE yellow Zucchini. I boil it and then stick it to a plastic poker with a suction cup on one end and stick them to three different levels in the tank against the glass. They love it. :D

I give my fish what ever veg I happen to be cooking -

Last night they had some par boiled peas and a slice of carrot. all the fish like the peas and the Plec loved the carrot it sucked it up and was doing summersaults (sp?) with it in its mouth.

Should be OK sticking most veggies in. If after a day it hasn't been eaten take it out so it doesn't start to rot. ( this is IMO) does any one know any veggies that can't be fed to fish??

Someone mentioned bread - does this benefit the fish in any way??

Not sure if the bread is of any nutritious value, but my fish seem to love it b/c they devour the bread upon entry into the tank.

What do you guys think about broccoli? I couldn't find the zucchini I bought for the fish and I can't find anything else. I put it in there anyways.

On the back of the veggie clip it said placing veggies in the freezer make it more nutritious for the fish b/c it softens the membranes. Is that true? For which plants?

Try to avoid bean liz bean sprouts would work though. And carrots might be to hard
