Vacing Sand

i was pondering the possibilites of putting sand in my tank, but then i thought of the cleaning of it.

does sand get caught in gavel vacs a lot?

Depends on the sand but virtually all of them will lose at least a few grains of sand. The way you clean sand is hovering the siphon over it since it is more compact than gravel, you don't have to worry about anything getting stuck underneath the sand.
