Hey there folks! I recently posted talking about how im new to saltwater and am hoping to set up my 20 tall tank as a small 'nano' reef tank. Everything is going smoothly in terms of research, except one bump in the road... Future vacations. We tend to do alot of these over the course of each year, usually ranging from 3 day weekends to 2 weeks at max (dad needs to go home to work so he feeds and checks up). Am i crazy or naive to be considering a salt water tank knowing that no one will be around to chck up on it? That brings another point to memory, for whatever reason they have, my parents dont want ANYONE going into the house....trust me when i say ive tried to sway their opinions, but they stand strong...

So this is where my heart falls to the bottom of my currently empty 20 gal.

Even with researching DIY and other such AUTO TOP OFF systems that are appearently easy to make and being 'effective'. And also having the battery operated vacation feeders to step on, should i still take the jump into salt water? (if your looking to see what i plan to do IF i find something that will work for vacation care check out my last post). Any input is great, i really dont want to sound selfish or whatnot about setting up this tank or not but any info/ ideas would be appreciated!!!

I don't really know, if you were that keen to have it, I think it would be feasible to move it elsewhere for the week/2 week holidays. I moved my 20gal last weekend and it was no great hassle. I know it's not ideal for the fish but in my opinion better than leaving them for 2 weeks unchecked. It is a fair bit of work but if as you say you really want it then I would say that's your answer as long as you can find a friend you can truly trust.

By the way I am 100% with your parents mate, there is no way I would let any friends of my children in my house while I'm away (although my daughters only 3 so her friends couldn't reach the handle anyway), only people who come into my house when I'm not here is my parents, my best mate and my sister in law.

Thanks for the input! As far as constantly moving the tank from home to home....im not quite sure thats the best option..especially going down stairs... BUT! Im thinking of getting a 29 gallon biocube and finding an auto top off sytem and special surge protector and auto feeder and see how things go.
