Using Sand in Tank for Corys

That's a question with multiple answers. I use pool filter sand and have had no problems with my cories at all. They dig around it and have no troubles with it. Other people use play sand but IMO it's too light and clouds too easy with most brands. Then there's Tahitian Moon Sand which is kind of expensive but a very fine grain sand. It won't cloud after you properly wash it but the grains will rise up easy with disturbance. There's about a half dozen other kinds of sand too.

Hi corydoc,

I use play sand in my cory and loach tanks, i have not had any problems with it clouding the water but you do have to wash it well when you first get it to get rid of the fine dust, this takes ages swirling it round in a bucket. I find this sand to be a lot cheaper than other sands and my fish love it.

Hope this helps

Silver sand is what I use with the cats. Doesn't get cloudy in a strong current or if disturbed. You can get it ready washed too. And the live plants seem to flourish in it too. :D

Hi CoryDoc :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I've used #3 gravel in my cory tanks for a long time and, just this year, have started switching to sand. I'm quite happy with play sand from Home Depot. It's less than $3.00 for a 50 pound bag, but it does take a bit of effort to wash the silt from it.

On the plus side, once it is cleaned, I find that my water stays clear and the corys delight in digging through it. IMHO, it's well worth the time and effort it takes to wash it.

I also use very fine silica sand for my tanks which you should be able to get at your lcal fish store and have never had a problem with it and my corys, i've never experience one eroded barbel or bacterial infection with them in the year and a half i have been keeping corys :)
