My amazon swords look pretty sorry for themselves in the tetra complete substrate so ive bought some tetra plant root tabs as a supplement. It says on the pack to crush them but surely when i do that they will float around the tank? Ive broken one tablet into quarters, will this work if i put half a tablet under the roots of one amazon sword and half under another (smaller) amazon sord?

I have exactly the same problem with mine, brown/yellowish patches and a few small holes.

I used some of tetras root tabs, just broke in half and pushed into sand about 1-2cm away from centre of plant to make sure roots would start absorbing nutrients as quickly as possible. I have also tried the JBL 7 balls, which are really cheap.

Although some leaves are still brown and yellow, one stem is making little baby swords so something must be doing them good? :)

Yes, it will work. I use tetra complete plant root tabs myself from time to time. I usually use Tetra initial sticks combined with Tetra Florapride (liquide additive), that is if you are not using any liquide ferts. Some plants only absorb nutrients through the roots while others absorb nutrients through their leaves. One other thing. Make sure you are not using activated carbon. It will absorb everything including the ferts.

Bare in mind that 9 times out of 10 these swords will have been grown emersed and will shed their old leafs when submerged. Its perfectly normal for these to die off and new groth will follow shortly. Just pull these old leafs off from the bace once they start to brown.

Not strictly true. Carbon will not remove all ferts from the water. Some inpurities will be removed as well as any medication.
