Using my telescope

This a photo we got a while ago with our telescope & mobile phone.

Very nice, I do like astrology / astronomy but alas I do not have a telescope and always have been meaning to get one, especially since I've moved to the countryside where there is much less pollution and can actually see much more stars and clearer moon than in the city.

But unfortunately, I know nothing about the solar system or constellations apart from the obvious names of all our 8 planets and the easily recognisable stars like the big dipper, ursa minor with the pole star etc so very little indeed, so I'll need a decent book and maps as well!

It would be nice to do this with my son and learn more about out solar system etc, but he's only 6 at the moment, maybe a bit young but certainly when he's 8 or a bit older perhaps I'll then definitely be more interested in getting a half decent telescope but not at eye watering prices!

Thanks for sharing.

My son was all over the planets and stars when he was six, he even picked a solar system model from the toy catalogues for christmas, one that we had already bought him......
There's several night sky apps, the one on iOS is really good, his Nana has an iPad, they help with identifying stars and constellations and even man made objects in orbit.

My boy is really into dinosaurs rather than stars and the constellation system

Oh yeah, thats right, there is an iPhone app that has the names of constellation on it and simply move the iPhone camera up in the night sky and it shows you what the particular constellation you’re looking at, completely forgot about that.

Khaden skipped dinosaurs, from trains to planets to Minecraft and my old Xbox.......at least I have someone to play Call of Duty against now.......
Edit: stupid predictive text...........

Have you seen the new minecraft update? Very nice :). What cod games do y'all play?

Currently playing survival mode in MW3, he's only 8 and I let my xbox gold membership go when we had the kids. The only reason the xBox didn't get sold then was it bacame a media centre, but now Khaden is getting use of it. He also has a Nintendo Switch.

Are you gonna get cold war? I have a switch because my cousin wanted to play smash hehe

Callum, my lad, has a Amazon Kids Fire tablet and honestly I can very easily throw this darned thing away due to the fact he is glued to that thing sometimes.

Never mind a X Box or PlayStation, be near impossible to tear him away from those if he ever gets on them imho, he won’t as there’s neither of those in my house!

And I simply refuse to have them as well as I used to spend hours, if not days, playing certain games like MOH or Assassins Creed back in the day before I had Callum, so I do know how addictive these games can be.

Nintendo switch, expensive thing as my nephew has one of those, kind of a neat gadget actually and will not be getting one of those either as I’d rather spend the money on new fish tank stuff!

Sticking with dinosaurs and stars ;)

Khaden gets his switch for an hour and a half IF he gets all his school work and homework done. But kids can watch YouTube until they starve to death.....

My little one is dinosaur obsessed & crabs

@Ch4rlie the telescope would be great to use with Callum. You can use it during the day but with darker evenings in winter it's great too.

I must check out the app cause we've only found the moon

Must admit am tempted to get a telescope soon as you mentioned that the winter is coming and with that comes the cold and that makes for crystal clear skies......

Does anyone have a recommendation for a half decent telescope that’s not too expensive?
Say between £50-£100 maybe, might go a little more if it’s worth it. Or is that too cheap and not worth it?

Now you can see how much I know about telescopes

Just realised I’ve sort of hijacked @TheTenthDoctor ‘s thread!

Sorry! :flowers:

It's out in the garage but pretty sure ours is Skywatcher. Maybe look on ebay for good deals.
