Generally you use rubble. which can be bought seperatly, but if you have not got any then just smash up the worst attractive bits with the least life attached.

Igot lods ov spare bits sitting under my main tank so ill take bits out of that and smash it up then

if you must use a canister filter for marine aquaria try alfagrog it is high porous rock designed for koi filters, it works wonders and is readily available from aquatic or pond centres, try aqua jardin or world of water centres hope this helps
