We've just aquired a super new tank which is rather huge (400 litres) and I work this out to be 105 US gallons or 88 Imperial gallons. (although, oddly, using the dimensions and the calculator on this site makes it 477 litres but I have decided to go with the manufacturers indication of volume since I would hope they know best).

So, my question is, if things you add to water don't specify whether they are an amount per US gallons or an amount per Imperial gallons how much do I put in (all our stuff just says "add x amount per gallon)??? Or should I just give up trying to use gallons and go with litres?

It didn't matter much with our old tank as that was about 28 Imperial gallons or 34 US gallons so "only" 6 gallons in it, but now the differential is 17 gallons I am a bit more concerned about over/underusing things like aquarium salt and dechlorinator when we initially fill the tank.

Any bright ideas?

Thanks for the link Breezer. It doesn't really answer my question, though, perhaps I should try to be a bit more clear...

On a lot of packets for salt etc it just says add x amount per gallon - what type of gallon is it referring to? Should I add 88 gallons worth or 105 gallons worth?! I obviously don't want to under or over do things...

Thanks fishyfrenzy. I didn't like to assume since a lot of the products seem to be from USA, wasn't sure if they accounted for this when shipping products over, eg. special packaging for UK etc.

*sigh* why do they make the world so complicated eh!

I would be very careful actually. Most UK products I would have thought would use litres now.

Most products have measurements in both Litres and Gallons, if you aren't sure which type of gallon it's referring to, use litres instead.

If it's a UK or European company making the product (check the information on the back, there should be an address of the HQ), it's almost always UK Gallons (most put "UK Gallons" to be safe).

If it's American or Japanese, it's most likely US Gallons, in my experience.

Thanks for all the input. I have decided to only use things that give a specification in Litres now as it will save all my confusion and potential messups!!!
