Hi,
Urgent Help Please. I recently bough a pair of Kribensis, first ones I have had. The female has just given me 10 young fry and not sure what I am meant to do with them. I have had loads of guppy fry so do I do the same. I have a little breeder tank inside my tank and caught all the fry and put them in it for safety from the bigger fish, was I correct in doing that. Also separated them from the mother, was that correct or should she be in with them.

At panic station as never had them before, they are now 4hrs old. Urgent advice Please.

I think with Kribs you leave them with the mum/dad they will look after them?

I hear they are pritty nasty to anything coming near there fry

Kribs usually make excellent parents, just like my Lionhead Cichlids, who will mercilessly attack anything that goes within ~6" of their offspring. However, this is where having robust tankmates is essential in a spacey tank, as fragile fish will not cope well with the Krib parents aggression.

What other fish are in the Krib tank right now?

Do you have any spare tanks that could be made into a nursery for the next few months?

Hi, thanks also for reply. Only rummy tetras, neon tetras, female fighter and a massive big plec which is 10" in size. That was what I was worried about as it hoovers everything up. The fry are in a 6" square breed cage at the moment but seperated from parents. Should I still put them back into tank which is 4ftx 18"x12".

I don't think you need to worry about the plec too much, the Kribs should warn it off and the catfish will not come to much harm. However, if the Krib parents attack anything else you have in that tank, they will keel over with very few direct hits. The Rummynose are in the most danger because they usually school in the lower water, very close to where the fry will be bouncing along the tank floor if let loose.

Personally, I would try and find a way of seperating the Krib family from the fragile fish, by sourcing another tank or even plstic tub and filter (for either the cichlids or the delicates).

OK Thank You again, Will try set up another small tank from loft. What do I feed them with. Been giving the fry TetraMin which is a powder form of food that I fed my guppy fry.

I'd imagine they will ver quickly be able to take finely crushed bits of food that you feed everyone else, my Steatocranus and Ilyodon ate finger crushed Tetra Prima and Hikari carnivore pellets from being visible for a day or two.

That's me been up in loft getting small tank, gravel was already in it so no cloudy water. Taken water from main tank and got heater on and pump on so will see how it goes just now. Not sure to try and move tonight or leave tank to sort out or move tomorrow and hope will they be ok.

Update...

Well with them all being that small they escaped out of breeding tank through the vents. So they are now back with mum and dad, yes they do look after and protect them well. Left them for now in main tank where born but have a small tank ready just in case any problems.
