I have treated my 55 gallon for excess ammonia and still cannot get it to zero on a test. what else can I do?

A large water change any time ammonia tests above zero. Go for 75%. If it isn't zero, do another.
Is it a new tank? Do you have fish in it?
By 'treated' do you mean Prime water conditioner? This just temporarily (24-48 hours) binds the ammonia. There isn't any way to remove it other than water changes.

I would also urge you to research the nitrogen cycle and how to cycle a tank if you are unfamiliar. Ammonia spikes often occur in newly set up and improperly cycled aquariums. Essentially you have not grown enough beneficial bacteria to process the ammonia and nitrites in the tank yet. If there are fish in there be prepared for many large water changes depending on your current parameters.
